Southwest Florida grew sugarcane long before it grew tourists, and a handful of small distilleries have spent the last decade making something of that. The result is a genuinely good day out that most visitors — and a fair number of residents — do not know exists. It runs roughly south to north, from Cape Coral up to Punta Gorda, and it is comfortably a single day with a driver.
Wicked Dolphin, Cape Coral
The best-known stop on the trail. Wicked Dolphin distils an award-winning rum from locally grown sugarcane, in small batches, in what is billed as Florida's largest copper pot still. The flavoured range is where it gets interesting — key lime, mango and cold brew coffee among them — and the tasting room is set up to walk you through the lot.

List Distillery, Fort Myers
Home of Mr. Tom's Spirits, a small-batch operation built on locally sourced, natural ingredients. The range is unusually broad for a distillery this size: vodka, gin, rum, bourbon and whiskey, plus a line of cream liqueurs. Worth the stop for the breadth alone — few places let you taste across that many categories in one room.
Alligator Bay Distillers, Punta Gorda
A Floridian craft rum distillery just off I-75, which makes it the natural northern end of the run or a convenient first stop coming the other way. Small, unhurried, and the kind of place where the person pouring generally made the thing.
Building the Day
Three stops is right. Four is ambitious and five is a mistake — tasting rooms are not restaurants, and the day works better with a long lunch in the middle of it than with a fourth flight.

A distillery trail has an obvious problem, and it is worse than a winery's: spirits tastings are stronger, the stops are further apart, and I-75 between them is not a road to be tired on.
