Experience Ultimate Comfort: Luxury Travel Guide to Sanibel & Captiva

A luxury travel guide to Sanibel and Captiva as the islands reopen — shelling beaches, new beachfront resorts, and chauffeured transfers from RSW.

Introduction: Islands in Their Second Chapter

Sanibel and Captiva are worth writing about honestly. Hurricane Ian reached them in 2022 and took much of the beachfront with it, and the islands have spent the years since rebuilding rather than reopening. Most businesses are trading again, the causeway is open, and the shelling — the thing people come for — was never damaged at all.

What has changed is the lodging. Several of the properties that defined these islands for decades are gone or still under construction, and what is replacing them is newer, built to current storm code, and in some cases better than what stood before. Arriving with a five-year-old guidebook is the one way to get this trip wrong.

Best Time to Visit November through April, as elsewhere on the Gulf Coast. Shelling is best after a winter blow, when the tide leaves the banks worth walking.

Where to Stay Now

Beachview Villas, Sanibel — a $16 million redevelopment on the site of the old Beachview Cottages, welcoming guests since Memorial Day 2026. Spacious villas with full kitchens and generous outdoor space, built for a quiet, private stay rather than a resort one.

Shalimar Beach Resort, Sanibel — thirty-three rooms directly on the beach, opened in September 2025. It is the first newly built hotel on Sanibel in more than forty years, constructed to modern hurricane code.

Island Inn, Sanibel — one of the island's longest-standing properties, open again to all guests.

Captiva Island Inn — mid-way through a $6 million rebuild that will bring it back to fifteen units, with reopening expected in late 2026. Worth checking before you plan around it.

On Captiva, the Mucky Duck has reopened — a beach institution and, for a lot of returning visitors, the moment the islands started feeling like themselves again.

What the Islands Are Actually For

Sanibel runs east to west, which is why the shells pile up here and almost nowhere else in Florida. Bowman's Beach and Blind Pass are the names to know. J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge covers a large share of the island and is best in the early morning, when the wading birds are working the flats.

Captiva is smaller, quieter and more expensive, and that is the whole point of it. The drive up Captiva Drive with the Gulf on one side and the bay on the other is the prettiest few miles in Lee County.

Getting to Sanibel and Captiva

Southwest Florida International (RSW) is the practical airport. The islands are reached by the Sanibel Causeway, which is a toll crossing and the only road on and off — worth factoring into departure timing more than most people do.

Parking on the islands is limited and enforced, bicycles outnumber cars on the shared-use paths, and the drive from RSW is long enough to be tiring after a flight. A chauffeur removes the rental counter, the causeway toll, and the question of where the car goes for a week.
